How Do You BYOD?

How best to approach ‘bring your own device’ (BYOD) programs is a question that can be answered hundreds of different ways by hospitals and health systems—there is no universal ‘right way’ or singular best practice. There are many benefits to BYOD, but there are also challenges and concerns. It seems the homepage of any healthcare publication regularly includes at least one BYOD-related headline, and it remains a very hot topic among our customers as well.

This is why we decided to take our oft-cited annual industry survey on healthcare mobility strategies (view the 2014 results) in a more focused direction. This year we are asking healthcare professionals about the state of BYOD in their organizations today.Spok screen with multiple mobile phones

We started the mobility strategies survey back in 2012 to gain a better understanding of how hospitals and health systems were incorporating smartphones into clinical workflows, and to assess their plans for the future. Smartphones were no longer just in the hands of administrators. 

We knew from our customers and our Sales and Support teams in the field about the shift in the industry to include more mobile devices across organizations. We wanted to learn more and get a broader picture of mobility trends in healthcare, so the first mobility strategies survey came to life. The hundreds of responses provided a stronger pulse on the market. The results were insightful and interesting, so we published them and found that they were interesting and helpful to people and organizations beyond our own.

The impetus is the same for this year’s survey focused on BYOD. We have valuable feedback from our customers on how they’re each approaching BYOD, but we want to hear from you, too. Despite the absence of a one-size-fits-all solution, we know there are methods and processes that may work better for certain environments or for specific organizational goals.

What I’m most interested to discover in this year’s results is the split between BYOD and hospital-issued devices. The convenience and cost savings of BYOD has stiff competition with the control and security of devices issued by and overseen by the hospital. I’m also eager to see how many of those organizations currently employing BYOD use mobile device management (MDM) and secure texting solutions for PHI protection.
